A Normed Space with the Beckman-Quarles Property

چکیده

Beckman and Quarles proved that a unit distance preserving mapping from a Euclidean space E into itself is necessarily an isometry. In this paper, we give an example of a (non-strictly convex) normed space H for which every unit distance preserving function from H into itself is an isometry. A discrete form of the Beckman-Quarles theorem for two-dimensional strictly convex normed spaces

Let X and Y be real normed vector spaces such that dimX ≥ dimY = 2 and Y is strictly convex. Let ρ > 0 be a fixed real number. We prove that if x, y ∈ X and ||x − y||/ρ is a rational number then there exists a finite set Sxy ⊆ X containing x and y such that each injective map from Sxy to Y preserving the distance ρ preserves the distance between x and y. Let Q denote the field of rational numbe...

Nonexpansive mappings on complex C*-algebras and their fixed points

A normed space $mathfrak{X}$ is said to have the fixed point property, if for each nonexpansive mapping $T : E longrightarrow E $ on a nonempty bounded closed convex subset $ E $ of $ mathfrak{X} $ has a fixed point. In this paper, we first show that if $ X $ is a locally compact Hausdorff space then the following are equivalent: (i) $X$ is infinite set, (ii) $C_0(X)$ is infinite dimensional, (...

A Characterization of Similarity Maps Between Euclidean Spaces Related to the Beckman–Quarles Theorem

It is shown that each continuous transformation h from Euclidean m-space (m > 1) into Euclidean n-space that preserves the equality of distances (that is, fulfils the implication |x−y| = |z−w| =⇒ |h(x)−h(y)| = |h(z)−h(w)|) is a similarity map. The case of equal dimensions already follows from the Beckman–Quarles Theorem. Mathematics Subject Classification (2000): primary 51F20, secondary 51F25,...

Unit-circle-preserving mappings

If f is an isometry, then every distance r > 0 is conserved by f , and vice versa. We can now raise a question whether each mapping that preserves certain distances is an isometry. Indeed, Aleksandrov [1] had raised a question whether a mapping f : X → X preserving a distance r > 0 is an isometry, which is now known to us as the Aleksandrov problem. Without loss of generality, we may assume r =...

The rational analogue of the Beckman-Quarles Theorem and the rational realization of some sets in E

We describe the recent developments concerning the rational analogues of the Beckman-Quarles Theorem, and discuss a related result concerning isometric embeddings in Q of subsets of E. 1 – Let E denote the Euclidean d-space, and let Q denote the Euclidean rational d-space. A mapping f : E → E is called ρ-distance preserving if ‖x − y‖ = ρ implies that ‖f(x)−f(y)‖ = ρ. The Beckman Quarles Theore...
